Who doesn't want to be a billionaire? Even Bruno Mars wants to be
one, and he wants it bad ("I wanna be a billionaire so freakin' bad!")!
That may be a lofty goal for many of us. So let's set the bar lower. How about becoming a millionaire? Even though almost 10% of Singaporeans are millionaires, 90% of us are not!
The hard truth is that becoming rich is not that easy. But there are
some lessons that we could learn from rich people who have become
millionaires or billionaires in ways that might surprise you.
To inspire you on your journey to become a millionaire, we at GET.com have come up with 3 unusual ways to become rich:
1. Sell A Property
Ms. Shirley Seng is only 26 years old, but she is a millionaire. And she did it overnight!
Ms. Shirley is a property agent who successfully sold a penthouse at Le
Nouvel Ardmore condominium for $51 million in April this year. She
would have earned a commission of about $1.5 million from the deal.
Hey, if she can do it, maybe you can too! Make sure you become a
qualified property agent first. And most importantly, make sure you sell
the right property!
I know a few property agents, some of whom are my friends, but none
of them has become a millionaire (Sorry, my friends, I'm with you guys
100%!).
2. Start A Website
What is the common trait among these rich people: Mark Zuckerberg
(CEO of Facebook), Andrew Mason (CEO of Groupon), Matthew Mullenweg
(founding developer of WordPress), Jack Ma (founder of Alibaba Group),
and Robin Li (CEO of Chinese search engine Baidu)?
You guessed it: They all started a website. If you are looking for
inspiration closer to home, you can learn from people who founded Zopim,
the Singapore-based live customer support chat website.
Early last year, Zopim was acquired by San Francisco’s Zendesk, a deal that turned its founders into millionaires.
If you've got what it takes and know how to run a successful website,
you could become rich too! Be prepared to live through some pretty hard
times though. The founders of Zopim barely made $410 a month for two
years when they first started the website in 2008.
3. Quit College
And what's the common trait among ultra-rich people like Bill Gates
(founder of Microsoft), Michael Dell (founder of Dell), Mark Zuckerberg
(CEO of Facebook), Steve Jobs (founder of Apple Inc.), and Jan Koum
(creator of WhatsApp)?
Please don't tell me they are all Americans! One thing they have in
common is that they all made their fortunes by creating their own tech
companies, which have since become some of the biggest brands on the
planet. But they also have another thing in common: They all dropped out
of college to pursue their own ideas.
But please don't make any rash decision and quit college! Only 35%
of the world's richest people never finished undergraduate studies. So
don't bet your future on your brilliant idea about a new technology,
unless you are absolutely sure you belong to that 35%!
